Chapter Nine

Crystal walked into Emerald City Outfitters fifteen minutes before her shift began. Her mother had taught her you only get one opportunity to make a good impression and had pegged Amelia as a person who appreciated punctuality.

She walked through the store and waved at Lisa, who was helping a young girl try on a pair of snow boots.

She arrived at Amelia’s office and knocked.

“Come in,” Amelia’s familiar stern tone rang out. “You’re early. I approve.”

“I’m excited to start in the store.” Crystal had practiced the enthusiasm in her voice.

“I’m not positive you’re sincere, but I do appreciate the good attitude. Most guides don’t like the tame life of working in the store, but it’s a good way for you to see different types of equipment, and to meet the people who use it. It’s also a good way to familiarize yourself with new activities by talking to your fellow guides. The greater the variety of outdoor knowledge you have, the more valuable you are to the company.”

“I’m excited to learn all I can, but I should warn you, I don’t have any retail experience,” Crystal confessed.

“I know from your résumé that you don’t, but we are happy to train you,” Amelia waved away the concern. “I’m going to get you started reading our policy manual and watching training videos. It might be a little dry, but it will give you a good foundation.”

Amelia led her down the hall to the break area where everything was laid out. Sitting on the table was a large three ring binder and a laptop.

Amelia showed her the folder on the computer containing the videos and instructed her to start working her way through everything in front of her.

“What if I have any questions?” Crystal asked.

“Write anything you want to ask down. If you feel the need to stretch your legs, come find Lisa or me. She’s my senior employee and knows all of this, front to back,” Amelia said, tapping the binder.

Amelia left the room and Crystal opened the policy manual. Several hours ticked by, and she forced herself to focus as she read through the documents on vacation policies, stocking procedures, and inventory systems.

“How’s it going?” Crystal’s eyes flashed open. Had she been drifting off? A smiling Lisa had entered the room and grabbed a brown paper bag out of the refrigerator.

“It’s a little boring,” Crystal admitted. Lisa produced a yogurt from her lunch bag and a spoon from a drawer.

“I fell asleep reading this stuff my first day,” Lisa confessed. “Amelia caught me, if you can believe it. I figured she was going to fire me on the spot, but she only said, ‘No rest for the weary.’ It’s one of her catch phrases. I guarantee you’ll hear, ‘No rest for the weary’ at least once a week.”

“She seems like a good boss,” Crystal ventured.

“The best. You always know where you stand, and she listens to reason.”

“What a relief. My last boss was a narcissistic know-it-all who took out her anger on the staff.
